Apply Philosophy for Better Living

One may understand philosophy as a typical theoretical based subject. It is meant to be discussed and explored. The main idea is to dive in depth and learn various concepts associated with human life. But, this concept is never thought to be analysed practically. Philosophy is said to be a diverse field. It has both practical and theoretical influence. The practice of studying philosophy only as a theoretical subject is wrong. It could also be followed practically. The idea of applying the conceptual knowledge of philosophy in practical life is studied under applied philosophy. Whatever knowledge we may acquire through the theoretical study could be implemented to solve the practical problems of our social & personal life.

According to Stevenson, Applied philosophy is relevant to the everyday problem of our life. We are living in the 20th century, we have to face many social, political and technological problems. We may seek ethical answers to various problems. To manage the gaps between ‘just answering a question’ and ‘ethically answering it’, we may need the knowledge of applied philosophy and applied ethics.

The scope of applied philosophy is not just limited to personal life but the scope is diverse and covers all the areas of life. Applied philosophy studies the degree to which people experience freedom of expression. Our freedom of expression should not limit or harm others free livings. We must use it to act in the best possible ways. If the freedom is used wrongly to harm others, then immediate solutions could be drawn through the applied ethics. It is now clear that applied ethics comes under applied philosophy. It is a practical use of our subjective knowledge.

People tend to discriminate or feel uncomfortable with things which are different from them. It is general psychology to feel uncomfortable in the presence of the foreign thing. One may wish to stay closer to a group which is like us and useful for us. The social norms & cultures are formed to bring similar kinds of people together. But, have we ever thought of disabilities as something different? It might be possible that we may not like to see the disable people, because they may look weird to our eyes. But the true fact is they are different but not of other categories. They are just like us and only miss some features which is in us. It is no way going to make them a different or foreign being and give us the power to discriminate and torture them from taking any social benefits. This social problem of making unreasonable discrimination against disables are studied and resolved under applied philosophy.

One may think that lying is a wrong behaviour ethically and morally. In every religion, one is taught to avoid lying. But, what about lying in some circumstances and conditions? Suppose a doctor is lying about your bad health just to make sure that you are not affected mentally. Suppose hijacked plane staffs are lying about the plane technical systems in order to save the plane and people from unseen troubles and dangers. Keeping all this in view, it is believed that there are some conditions and circumstances under which a person could engage in moral lying. This condition is studied under the subject of applied philosophy.

Some philosophers have distinguished between ethics (“Which acts are morally permissible?”), applied ethics (“When is it morally permissible to kill in war?”), and applying applied ethics (“Was the bombing of Hiroshima morally permissible?”) (Kamm 2013: 568–576).

The possible moral questions are raised on the topic of Applied Philosophy. This moral questions related to our daily life are tried to be resolved through the subject knowledge of applied ethics. And when some similar situations arise, we can implement the knowledge of applied ethics in dealing with the problems.

The questions of ‘what we ought to do?’ is answered through the knowledge of applied ethics by comparing specific questions of varied topics.

Applied philosophy is justified if and only if the problem is understood to have an impact in the causal system of this world.

While there is a significance of applied philosophy which is worthy of judged universally, but its relevance is only for the practical aspects of life. The purely theoretical concepts are studied under the subject of ‘pure philosophy’. So, there is a difference between pure and applied philosophy. The pure philosophy is logic, metaphysics and epistemic. The knowledge of such subjects is applicable to the same branches. We may not mix up logic questions by answering in an epistemic way. The answer to logic-based questions must be only resolved logically. The applied philosophy part is different. It seeks answers through the various concepts of philosophy. The knowledge of philosophy is applied in our day to day problems. The applied philosophy is based on how an audience understands as well as judge a problem. For example, killing is wrong but if a terrorist is killed, then it is morally right. So, the judgments of the audience are considered as superior in the theory of applied philosophy. The pure philosophy seeks the proper evaluation of historical concepts and the perspective of modern time philosopher. There are many such differences between a pure and applied philosophy. But, here our focus is to understand the concept of applied philosophy and its relevance so as to use it in our daily life.

To sum up, the practical aspects of philosophy could not be ignored. Like science, its knowledge could be utilized practically in maximizing the benefits of our life. Our beliefs could be altered by understanding the practical implications of a norms or standards. The beliefs should be for the best of people and it should agree with the conditions of life.
