From Sensations to Compassions; redefining Values in us.

Here we are going to discover the origination and advancement of ‘compassion’ from a simple ‘sensations’. We need to know the importance of ‘compassion’ in our life, so as to adopt it as one of the important values from the humanistic perspectives. The fruit of happiness could ever be obtained when one involves in a self-transforming process by adopting ‘compassion’ in lives.

Knowing sensations

Sensations are mainly called as a physical feeling with reference to an object or a body. It is a kind of biological process where our sensory receptors receive stimulus from other object or body and in return passes meaningful responses to it. The sensory receptors in us are-
Visual( mostly related to vision)
Auditory(mostly related to sounds)
Gustatory( taste receptors & taste buds)
Olfactory(related to smell)
Somatosensory receptors(related to one’s skin or within one’s body).

We generally sense an object or a body and initiate further communications/relations with respect to a stimulus we are receiving. The positive stimulus generates, most probably a positive response and a negative stimulus generate most probably a negative response.

Our sense organs receive stimuli and pass it to brains for further detections and verifications. After our brain completely verifies a signal, the response of familiarity or anonymity with respect to a particular stimulus is discovered.

The familiar stimulus is communicated further and the unfamiliar one is neglected.

To know further on how a stimulus could be converted to either friendly or hostile responses, let’s understand completely the meaning of compassion.

Etymologically, compassion could be called as a sympathy, understanding, a feeling of co-suffering or empathizing with others.

Co-suffering

When you see something distressing, you feel bad. You feel pity for the sufferer. You feel that this shouldn’t be happening to a sufferer as it is difficult to handle(like an accident). We feel sympathy for the victims of floods, famine, terrorism and illegal immigration. We feel that this bad thing shouldn’t be happening to anyone.

When we aren’t familiar with the victims, we feel a less amount of pain in other sufferings. But, what if victims are from some of us? Then, we feel a huge loss, we feel something of us is badly affected by damages.

Therefore, the degree of sufferings to a loss depends on our feelings of sensations or attachments to a particular person or situations. We suffer more when our own parts are damaged. We suffer more when someone just like us got hurt or suffered from a troubled situation. Thus, we feel the pain and show compassion when we are a co-sufferer.

Conclusively, it’s important to feel as a co-sufferer in others sufferings.

Identification

In a sensation, we always expect a feeling of identifications. We always feel distressed to other person sufferings. It occurs when we are somewhat related or attached to it. We seek a sense of identifications. The loss occurred in our own family may give us more pain as compared to the loss occurred in someone else’s family.

But, we should understand that the family, community, society, castes, are just a word to seek identification. It is a kind of categorizations of the same aspects of humanism. Everything such as family, the community comes under humanism. Instead of treating other communities different from our own, we should treat it as the same. It is because all this thing is just a product of humanism.

We should understand the truth that family, society, community are created for the proper nourishment and developments of an individual. It was not created to bifurcate all of us. When we are developing the feeling of proper identification with each one of us, we are more likely to generate a feeling of compassion towards others.

Connecting with sameness

Once we start connecting with others on beliefs of sameness, we may start feeling serious for the relations we get into. In brief, we should start understanding the sufferer’s troubles. We should have the abilities to picture self with the same problem. Once we realize that the problems are often the same but the objects are different, then we start empathising with every problem of human beings. We would start believing that the problems which are faced by such & such person today could be faced by us tomorrow.

In short, we should be empathizing with others problems and really play a supportive role in other bad circumstances.

Responding well

When we very well understand others problems and situations, we should not delay in empathizing with the problems of others. We should be very well showing the patience and wisdom, the kindness and mercy, the perseverance & love, the warmth & resolve, the all rounding compassion, care and affections.

This is the ultimate duty of humanity. The switching from sensation to compassion doesn’t require many efforts but ultimately give happiness in any kinds of relations. The theory of compassion is taught in almost every religion of humanity- the Hindus, Islams, Judaist, Sikhs, and Christianity.

In Hindu Philosophy, the words related to compassion are daya, karuna, kripa, anukrosha, the concepts of all being as part of self, the concepts of Brahman as one, may guide an individual to choose the value of compassion in respect to all beings by considering ‘them’ as part of ‘us’ and ‘ourselves’ as a part of ‘whole’.
